Join the Topping family at their smallholding in Hailsham for a friendly, practical introduction to keeping dairy goats.
Perfect for anyone considering keeping dairy goats, those who have recently started out, or simply anyone who would like to learn more,
this small-group evening will give you an opportunity to meet the goats and discover what is involved in caring for and milking your own dairy herd.
What you'll learn
During the evening, the Topping family will share their experience and practical knowledge, covering:
- Dairy goat breeds and choosing the right goats
- Housing and everyday care
- Feeding and nutrition
- Breeding and kidding
- Milking and milk production
- The realities — and rewards — of keeping dairy goats
You'll then get hands-on with the goats, with a demonstration of milking using a mobile milking machine
followed by the opportunity to have a go at hand-milking a goat yourself.
From Two Goats to Marshcroft Goat Dairy
The Topping family's goat-keeping journey began with just two dairy goats, originally kept to provide their family with fresh milk, yoghurt and cheese.
They quickly discovered that goat keeping can be rather addictive! Their herd grew, and Marshcroft Goat Dairy was born.
Today they milk seven goats, all of whom have names and are very much part of the Topping family.
During the evening you'll also have the chance to sample their goats' milk and homemade cream cheese,
including plain and flavoured varieties, with produce available to purchase.
A Small, Hands-On Workshop
To make sure everyone has plenty of time with the goats and receives individual guidance while learning to milk,
places are strictly limited to just 5 participants.
