DESCRIPTION:Poultry Rearing\, Dispatch & Processing  - Wednesday 7th October 2026 16:00 to 18:00\nAn informative talk and equipment demonstration with Esme Clifton\nFor many smallholders\, rearing chickens\, turkeys or ducks for the table is an important part of becoming more self-sufficient. \nHowever\, one of the biggest challenges can be knowing how to take that final step confidently\, correctly and with the highest possible regard for animal welfare. \nHaving worked in the poultry sector since her teenage years\, including 10 years on a free-range meat chicken farm\, \nEsme Clifton has a wealth of practical experience in poultry rearing\, dispatch and butchery. \nThrough working with smallholders\, she recognised just how difficult it can be to access poultry processing facilities and how many people would benefit from practical advice and support. \nIn response\, Esme created her own mobile poultry processing set-up\, with a specially equipped trailer containing everything \nneeded to take a home-reared bird through the process from dispatch to being fully dressed and ready for the freezer. \nFor this SFTG session\, Esme will bring along her equipment and explain what each piece is used for and how the process works from beginning to end. \nPlease note: this is an informative talk and equipment demonstration. No birds will be dispatched or processed during the session. \nEsme will cover topics including: \n\nChoosing and sourcing suitable poultry for meat\nRearing chickens\, ducks and turkeys for the table\nPreparing birds for processing\nHumane dispatch and the importance of good welfare\nThe equipment required and how it is used\nPlucking\, dressing and preparing birds for the freezer\nCommon problems and challenges and how to deal with them\nPractical considerations for the smallholder processing their own poultry\n\nThere will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss your own experiences or concerns with Esme. \nWhether you're already raising poultry for meat\, considering doing so for the first time\, or simply want to understand more about the process \n before deciding whether it's for you\, this session offers a friendly and practical introduction based on genuine hands-on experience. \nA great opportunity to gain knowledge and confidence in one of the more challenging — but important — aspects of producing your own food. \n  \n  \nThis workshop will be running Wednesday 07.10.2026 16:00-18:00 in Chiddingly\nThere will be tea\, coffee and cake included \nTicket price £20

DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Keeping Dairy Goats\nFriday 9th October 2026 | 5.00pm–7.00pm | Hailsham\n£35 per person | Maximum 5 participants \nJoin the Topping family at their smallholding in Hailsham for a friendly\, practical introduction to keeping dairy goats. \nPerfect for anyone considering keeping dairy goats\, those who have recently started out\, or simply anyone who would like to learn more\, \nthis small-group evening will give you an opportunity to meet the goats and discover what is involved in caring for and milking your own dairy herd. \nWhat you'll learn\nDuring the evening\, the Topping family will share their experience and practical knowledge\, covering: \n\nDairy goat breeds and choosing the right goats\nHousing and everyday care\nFeeding and nutrition\nBreeding and kidding\nMilking and milk production\nThe realities — and rewards — of keeping dairy goats\n\nYou'll then get hands-on with the goats\, with a demonstration of milking using a mobile milking machine \nfollowed by the opportunity to have a go at hand-milking a goat yourself. \nFrom Two Goats to Marshcroft Goat Dairy\nThe Topping family's goat-keeping journey began with just two dairy goats\, originally kept to provide their family with fresh milk\, yoghurt and cheese. \nThey quickly discovered that goat keeping can be rather addictive!
